What you're looking at
The Fuel EX is Trek's do-everything 29er trail bike, and the 9.8 has long been the sweet spot of the range: full OCLV carbon front and rear, 150 mm of fork travel over 140–145 mm out back depending on generation, and Trek's ABP layout with the rear pivot sitting concentric to the axle so braking doesn't firm up the suspension. It is the build most riders actually buy — carbon frame, mid-tier suspension, a 12-speed drivetrain — rather than the halo 9.9 with Factory-level everything, and it is the one Trek dealers tend to have on the floor in multiple sizes.
What Freehub and Trek have not said is which one. The Official Rules describe the prize as "one (1) Trek Fuel EX 9.8 build, excluding electric-bikes with prize options limited to available stock." That sentence is doing real work. Trek redesigned the Fuel EX for 2026 — the Gen 7 frame is about 200 g lighter, moves to 145 mm rear travel, and drops the Mino Link and angle-adjust headset in favour of a leverage-rate flip chip and swappable rocker links — while Gen 6 bikes are still sitting in shops. Model year, generation, drivetrain, frame size and colour are all unpublished, so the winner's bike is a function of dealer inventory. The e-bike exclusion also means the Fuel EXe is off the table, which is worth knowing before anyone gets ideas.
Why it matters
Giveaways this clean are rarer than the bike is. Freehub is a quarterly, coffee-table-format mountain bike magazine out of Bellingham, Washington, and the Golden Ticket is a distribution play: copies go out through Trek's dealer network, there's a QR code on the ad inside, and the prize is the reason you pick the issue up. That's the whole business model — no entry bundles, no "5,000 entries for $100" tier, no charity percentage to parse. One bike, one winner, and the only currency is your email address.
It also means the odds are genuinely unknowable and probably not terrible. The rules say only that "odds of winning will vary depending on the number of eligible Entries received." A print-magazine QR code reaches a far smaller pool than a paid sweepstakes platform running Meta ads, but the online form on the giveaway page is open to anyone who finds it, so treat the entry count as a black box.
The fine print worth knowing
You do not need the magazine. The promotional page frames entry as a trip to a Trek dealer: pick up a copy of Freehub, scan the QR code on the ad. The rules are broader. Section 4 reads: "Enter the Sweepstakes during the Promotion Period online by visiting the entry form, which can be found on the following website at https://freehub.com/newsroom/trek-golden-ticket-giveaway." The dealer trip is optional, both routes cost nothing, and the page itself states that magazine purchase is not necessary to enter. There is no paid entry path in this promotion at all.
The bike is whatever is in stock, and can be substituted. Beyond the "available stock" limit, the rules keep the usual latitude: "Sponsor reserves the right in its sole and absolute discretion to award a substitute prize of equal or greater value if a prize described in these Official Rules is unavailable or cannot be awarded, in whole or in part, for any reason." And the value floor cuts one way only — "if the actual value of the prize turns out to be less than the stated ARV, the difference will not be awarded in cash." In numbers: the stated ARV is $6,499, which matches the current Gen 7 Fuel EX 9.8; a leftover Gen 6 9.8 GX AXS listed at $5,999. Nobody makes up the $500.
No cash, and the tax bill is yours. "Prizes cannot be transferred, redeemed for cash or substituted by the winner," and "all federal, state and/or local taxes, fees, and surcharges are the sole responsibility of the prize winner." A $6,499 prize is ordinary income; at a 22–24% federal marginal rate that's roughly $1,430–$1,560 before any state tax. Budget for it or the bike costs more than a used one would have.
Move fast if you win. The drawing happens "about TWO (2) WEEKS after the Promotion Period," notification goes out by email roughly a week after that, and then the clock is short: the "Potential Winner must accept a prize by email as directed by Sponsor within THREE (3) DAYS of notification." An unread inbox forfeits it. Winners may also be asked to sign an affidavit of eligibility, a liability release and a publicity release.
Who is actually running it. Trek supplies the bike and the dealer network, but the sponsor of record is Freehub — the rules name "FREEHUB" as Sponsor and state that "Sponsor is responsible for the collection, submission or processing of Entries and the overall administration of the Sweepstakes," with winner-list requests going to Freehub Media LLC, PO Box 29831, Bellingham, WA 98228. Eligibility is US legal residents 18 or older, with no state carve-outs listed.

Why It's Special
There is nothing rare about a Fuel EX 9.8 — it is Trek's mainstream carbon trail build and dealers stock it by the rack. What is unusual here are the terms: a $6,499 bike with no paid entry route anywhere in the promotion, one winner, and a prize the rules deliberately leave open-ended — "excluding electric-bikes with prize options limited to available stock." You are entering for a Fuel EX 9.8, not for a specific Fuel EX 9.8.
Our value estimate
$6,499
Freehub's Official Rules put the prize at a "Total approximate retail value or 'ARV'" of $6,499, and that figure lines up with Trek's current pricing: the 2026 (Gen 7) Fuel EX 9.8 lists at $6,499, the outgoing Gen 6 Fuel EX 9.8 GX AXS listed at $5,999, and the Gen 6 9.8 XT Di2 sat right around $6,500. This is a brand-new bike pulled from dealer stock rather than a used one, so retail is the correct anchor — there is no mileage or depreciation to work back from. The one thing that could move the number down is the rules' own limit: the prize is "limited to available stock," and the rules add that "if the actual value of the prize turns out to be less than the stated ARV, the difference will not be awarded in cash." A leftover Gen 6 GX AXS build would land nearer $5,999. Model year, generation, build spec, frame size and colour are all unpublished, so $6,499 is best read as the ceiling Freehub has committed to rather than a guaranteed sticker. No cash alternative exists — the rules state prizes "cannot be transferred, redeemed for cash or substituted by the winner."
